Becky Hill after the battle rounds

Becky Hill is the article people ask for when they say 'old acts who came through'. She was on series one, on Danny O'Donoghue's team, and she was eliminated in the battle rounds. She did not win. She did not reach the final. The show, that year, was done with her.

What happened afterwards is why fans tell the story. She became a major British dance-pop singer, the kind of voice that turns up on radio years after a talent show has forgotten a battle-round loser. The chair did not predict that. The public vote never got the chance to. The career happened off to the side of the trophy.

That is a useful correction to a winner's list. The list records the competition. It does not record the music industry. A singer can leave in week three and still be the person a later audience sings along with. A winner can be the person that later audience cannot name.

Fans should not pretend the show 'made' every later record. The show was a televised round. The work after it was hers. The honest sentence is the short one: she came through series one, she went out in the battles, and then she had a career the Saturday-night edit did not contain.
